High Rise Building in Singapore safe?

Post by Dennis Ng »

Nowadays, there are many HDB flats which are 40 storeys, there are even condos that are over 50 storeys.

I remember a few years ago I went to visit the Central Fire Station. I had a conversation with a fireman.

He was showing me the the fire engine with the tallest ladder in Singapore. I asked him how high can it reach? He said 18 storeys. I asked him since I stay on 24th floor, if a fire occurs, how do they rescue me? Do they rescue me by landing a helicopter on the rooftop?

He said to me:"Sorry sir, we don't have helicopter. So how do you rescue me? He didn't answer me....
Cheers!

Hi Dennis

Not sure you'll read this and since I'm a fire safety manager.

Golden rules or international rules: - no body will risk his life to save another person from a fire risk situation...including fire fighter, unless that person to be save is your family member/kin. You may want to learn a few fire awareness knowledge to equip yourself and SELF- save yourself.

There's no sure fire-proof in high rise fire, remembered 911? Just that in Singapore the fire safety of building is pretty high in term of international fire safety standards...however it is not the situation in many parts of the world.

Many thanks

Theoritically, staircase won't burn as it is made of concrete. However, most of the people 'keep' their belonging as such bicycle, shoe cabinet, flamable stuff and etc... at the staircase which pose a fire hazard. When fire breakout, these things obstruct people from running down the stair safely, escpecially at night when there is also no lighting.

So, it is a good practice to ensure that the staircase is free of obstruction and flamable goods. How to ensure? Well, educate the public and have regular audit. :)
